Peru: U.S. Citizen Expelled from Peru after Serving 20 Years

Lori Berenson, a New Yorker who served a 20 year prison sentence in Peru on charges of belonging to and assisting the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, has been expelled from the country. She was first accused of taking part in a plan to attack the Peruvian Congress in 1995. She was never found guilty of taking part in violent acts, but was convicted of providing support to the rebel group. A military tribunal had originally sentenced her to life in prison, but due to political pressure, she was retried in a civilian court and her sentence was reduced. teleSUR
